Is the new era of interventional psychiatry closer than we think?

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine went to optogenetics, but what exactly is it? Optogenetics combines genetic engineering and light to control neuronal activity by introducing light-sensitive proteins called opsins into specific neurons. The neurons can then be activated or inhibited with great precision. Allowing researchers to investigate how neural circuits influence emotions, memories and behavior.
For psychiatry the ramifications and revolutionary.
Imagine a future where visiting a psychiatrist looks like visiting a surgeon. Instead of relying exclusively on medications and psychotherapy, patients might undergo highly targeted procedures to modify dysfunctional neural circuits.
Perhaps in a few decades we could potentially eradicate certain psychiatric symptoms.
We are approaching an era in which psychiatric disorders are treated through precise neural interventions rather than predominantly through symptom management.
As a scientific community let's discuss the exciting technical, safety and ethical aspects of this revolution.
